Jayne H Glass, Doctoral Student

  • MSc (Distinction) Environmental Sustainability, University of Edinburgh
  • BA (Hons) Geography, Hertford College, University of Oxford

Jayne joined the Centre for Mountain Studies in September 2007 as part of the ‘Sustainable Estates for the 21st Century’ PhD studentship team.

Under the supervision of Professor Martin Price and Dr Alister Scott (Birmingham City University), her PhD focuses on developing a novel participatory method that allows researchers to work with a range of stakeholders to discuss complex and/or controversial topics.

Jayne’s research explores the practical meaning of ‘sustainability’ in the context of estate management in upland Scotland by developing a sustainability toolkit that can be used by estate managers and other stakeholders to monitor progress towards sustainability on the ground.  The toolkit was developed over a series of iterative rounds in tandem with nineteen estate management and sustainability professionals, researchers and policy makers.

The 'Sustainable Estates Toolkit' will be piloted on a selection of upland estates owned by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
