Research Activities

Jin joined the CMS in March 2008 after her PhD and ESRC (Economic Social Research Council) Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Sheffield. Her PhD explored the landscape implications of mobile telecommunications development in the Peak District National Park, England, which examined the perceived landscape impacts of such development and their implications for landscape policy and planning.

During the Postdoctoral Fellowship year, she further explored the perceptions of landscape change in rural areas and the effects of increased environmental awareness on landscape change processes; developed expertise in quantitative approaches to measure environmental value and behaviour; and obtained experiences in online research methods and qualitative research approaches.

Her main research interests include perceptions of landscape change, environmental values and behaviour, community planning, rural development and environmental conservation policies, and communication between the academic and policy communities.

She has recently completed a study exploring early experience from the 2008 Single Outcome Agreement by conducting a survey with 32 Scottish Local Councils and their community planning partners. Her current research work concerns the effectiveness of the Periodic Review of Biosphere Reserves, an international network of protected areas designated by the UNESCO. Jin is also a member of the Outdoors and Health Network (OHN), an ESRC and the Medical Research Council co-funded project. The OHN is a collaborative network of researchers and public sector/policy representatives to examine the relationship between individuals’ health and well-being and their use of the outdoors.

She lectures on a module Research Methods and Techniques within the MSc in Sustainable Mountain Development Programme and is developing a module Participatory Approaches.

She also acts as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Biodiversity Science and Management.
