Catalina joined the Centre for Mountain Studies in November 2009 as part of the mountain.TRIP (Transforming Research into Practice) project team. This is an international project supporting sustainable development within Europe’s mountain regions that will encourage and facilitate the use of research findings by creating an innovative network for knowledge transfer between research and practitioners both on the ground and politically.
Catalina currently also manages a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) between the Centre for Mountain Studies and the Cairngorms National Park Authority. This project will enable networking and knowledge transfer while supporting the Park in achieving its strategic priorities. For more information on this project please click here.
Background
Catalina’s previous studies focussed on the Geographies of Mountain Regions (Alps and Carpathians) and GIS. She wrote her final thesis on “Landscape changes in the Romanian Carpathians”, addressing issues related to cultural landscapes in the Maramures Mountains, in the northern Romanian Carpathians. She used an inter- and transdisciplinary approach for understanding the driving forces of the present landscape changes by combining methods in physical and human geography and dealing with different environmental issues.

Previous Experience
Prior to joining the Centre for Mountain Studies, Catalina undertook a variety of positions, amongst which she worked as a part-time GIS Tutor at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. She has also volunteered for the Muntii Maramuresului Nature Park in Romania, where she was involved in Park conservation and developed topographic tourist map of a side-valley within the Park; she contributed to the Austrian Alpine Association’s map “Cordilliera Huayhuash (Perú)” dealing with altitude assignments and computing hill-shades for the representation on the map; Catalina also has some experience in 3D visualizations. Recently she was involved in a WWF project on ecological restoration of the Danube floodplains contributing to the project with a case-study on land use changes in the Romanian sector of the Danube River.
