Scotland's mountain areas, and those who live within them, are subject to a wide range of interacting environmental and economic forces.
A report providing an overview of the key issues was prepared during 2002 by CMS staff in collaboration with Imperial College, London, and the School of Geography and Geosciences at the University of St. Andrews.
The central chapter is based on interviews conducted with 30 key informants and on recent research, and is complemented by the results of a study undertaken to identify the main values of Scotland's mountain areas as perceived by members of conservation, recreation, and land-owning organisations.
Key conclusions with regard to partnerships and data and information are presented, recognising the diversity of situations and the need for integration.
